Nike Hoop Summit Returns To Portland
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—USA Basketball, Nike and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Portland Trail Blazers have teamed up to host the 2009 Nike Summit, scheduled for 7 p.m., April 11 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore. This will mark the second-consecutive year that the event was held in Portland.
The Nike Hoop Summit, a basketball game for high-school age boys, features America’s elite, young athletes playing against a World Select Team comprised of top international players age 19 or younger. The USA Select Team of 10 players, a head coach and an assistant coach was expected to be announced this month, with the World Select Team of 11 players announced in March. The World Select Team players will be chosen from five geographic zones of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body for basketball.
New Coaches At USA Wrestling
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—USA Wrestling (USAW), the national governing body for wrestling, has named 2000 Olympic Champion Brandon Slay of Dallas as the assistant coach and resident coach for the National Freestyle program. Slay won a gold medal at 76 kg/167.5 pounds at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Slay will assist the head coach in all facets of the National Freestyle Team program, with his primary focus on managing the resident wrestling program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He will manage the daily operations, recruiting and training of full-time and short-term resident athletes in the National Freestyle wrestling program.
Bill Zadick of Colorado Springs is the organization’s resident coordinator and assistant National coach. Zadick, a 2006 World Freestyle wrestling champion, is the liaison between USAW and the U.S. Olympic Training Center concerning USAW’s resident athlete programs. He also assists with coaching at resident and National Team practices. Zadick began his duties in January.
World Games 2010 Foundation Names New CEO
LEXINGTON, Ky.—The World Games 2010 Foundation has selected Jamie Link as the new CEO of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Link’s most recent positions included deputy secretary of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and deputy executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park. He also served as ex officio member of the World Games 2010 Foundation board of directors and was involved in ongoing construction projects at Kentucky Horse Park related to the games.
Norton Becomes Primary Sponsor Of USA Luge
LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—USA Luge has announced that Norton, a division of Saint-Gobain Abrasives, will become the primary sponsor of USA Luge and the U.S. National Luge Team. Norton, already the official abrasive products supplier to USA Luge, will assume primary sponsorship immediately and retain the title through 2011.
